kiss me deadly.........

After catching the second half of "Kiss Me Deadly", I saw that the lead character Mike was a hot- headed anti hero who enjoyed inflicting pain on others, especially the 1-2 combination face slap.  I don't know the whole story of the movie but i was able to see relationships that this movie made with the 1950's.  The movie shows no children, all adults that seem to have their own personal vendettas and secrets.  The movie portrays women as stupid irrational murderers.  I think the lead character relates to the testosterone-pumping males of the 1950's.

In response to the article  by Engelhardt and the two U.S. government issued documentaries we watched, I was really struck by the idea that the government wanted the U.S. citizens to remain inert to what was going on.  I think that the documentaries were made to keep the U.S. citizens followers of the governments' agenda.  Until the Vietnam war, I think this worked and people were right behind the government and didn't feel the need to ask, "Hey, why are we going to war again?".  In today's world i feel like there are a lot more people willing to challenge the government and what they are doing but i also feel that the same inertness is still going on today.  People are so wrapped up in what the media chooses to show that they don't bother to think about what really could be happening behind the scenes. So in the end, times haven't really changed much and people are still sheep being herded by the U.S. government.

What do you think Coontz means by characterizing the 50’s as innocent?

 

I think Coontz is talking about the average day “leave it to beaver” family in which there is a bread-winning father, home-making mother, and dependent kids that was the social standard in the 50’s.  These families had an innocent exterior where people thought that nothing bad happened in their lives, just wake up, make breakfast, send the kids off to school, go to work, come home, eat dinner, etc.

 

 

What terms would you use to describe our decade?

 

I would use terms like free-willed, drunk, confused, under the influence, unhappy, happy, not innocent, entertainment filled, and lied to, to describe our decade.  These are just a handful of terms that describe this generation.

 

 

Why?

 

I used those terms like not innocent, under the influence, and free willed because that’s just how it is in today’s world.  Kids are doing drugs and having sex in the 5^th grade and even younger, its just sad.  When it comes to being free willed, the youth of today want to retaliate against their parents and move out as fast as possible.
